FLAMBOYANCE OF CARNIVAL MEETS THE JAMAICAN MILITARY BAND

The flamboyance of Carnival meets the Jamaican Military Band to create a Costume Splash to remember.

The Annual Notting Hill Carnival Costume Splash will be dancing to a surprising beat this weekend when the combined Jamaican Military and Regimental Band leaves Buckingham Palace and heads up to North London and the splendour of Alexandra Palace.

The Band will be the special guests at this year’s Splash, the event that showcases all the flamboyant and extravagant costumes synonymous with the Notting Hill Carnival.

Organised by the Notting Hill Mas Bands Association, the event allows Carnivalists to showcase costumes that are too large for the crowded streets of Notting Hill, creating a spectacular display that lights up Alexandra Palace. Competition for the titles, across four age groups, for Best King of Carnival, Best Queen of Carnival, Best Male Costume, and Best Female Costume will be hard fought this year and the judges are sure to have a hard time picking a winner.

The appearance of the Jamaican Military Band this year will provide a soundtrack to remember…Performing with the backdrop of a panoramic view over London, the Band will be playing not just traditional military tunes but calypso, Jamaica’s own reggae, jazz and Motown.

The Jamaica Tourist Board’s Regional Director, UK / N. Europe, Elizabeth Fox said: “We are delighted that the JDF band will be performing at the Grand Carnival Costume Splash this Sunday. Not only have they brought the sunshine with them, they have also brought a taste of Jamaica’s unique sounds, which we hope will inspire the people of London to visit the island themselves.”

Colonel Derek Robinson commanding the Jamaican Regiment said: “I’m delighted the band has been given the opportunity to perform at the Grand Carnival Costume Splash. I have always been a fan of Notting Hill Carnival and I’m sure the band will bring a special Jamaican flavour to the event.”

Designer, Mahogany, Clary Salandy explains: "For me, as a costume maker, the Splash is the highlight of the Carnival Season. It is a demonstration of skills from across the country, and shows us what the other bands have produced.

"Each band has a different theme, this year ours takes into account the bi-centenary of the abolition of slavery. Our designs reflect this theme. They look at 'confinement versus freedom' using abstract shapes and colours."

Doors open at midday on both days. Saturday is Children’s Day and showcases all the younger members of the Carnival parading away from the rigours of the processional route. There will be a children's activity area, from 11.00am - 2.30pm on Saturday, where children may participate in a variety of activities before the stage show starts. Sunday features the adult’s costumes and is an opportunity to see the designs and costumes in more detail before the magnitude of colour and music the following weekend.

ITV Local London is the Official Online Channel to the Notting Hill Carnival 2007. Notting Hill Carnival is Europe's biggest street festival and has been one of the highlights of London's cultural calendar for more than four decades. For the first time, anyone unable to attend the weekend's festivities will be able to watch the action from the comfort of their PC through ITV's new broadband service ITV Local.
The dedicated ITV Local Notting Hill Carnival channel features a mix of video content made by community groups plus films specially commissioned by ITV Local.
