Calypso Rose

Calypso Rose the legendary calypsonian from Tobago. Born in April 1940, her voice brought her great success and she has given us classic tunes including Fire In Me Wire and Turn On the Pressure.

Calypso Rose made history as the first female to win the Trinidad Road March Competition with her song Tempo, in 1977, and went on to win the Calypso Queen title five years running. She won both the Trinidad Calypso Crown and Road March competitions in 1978, the Sunshine Award in 1989 and the Trinidad and Tobago Hummingbird Medal in 2000. Calypso Rose continues to make music and perfom, as her 1994 album, Soca Diva, surviving surgery for breast cancer in 1996, Rose is still at the top of her game. She has recently launched her new international album entitled 'Calypso Rose in France'.

Calypso Rose lives in New York, but returns to perform every year at Carnival in Trinidad. Calypso Rose has been featured in 'Calypso Dreams', and the documentary and CD Calypso at Dirty Jim's on Honest Jon's label.

"Take time for the wonderfully named Calypso Rose. The 70-year-old Tobagonian singer, writer of over 800 calypso songs, has beaten cancer twice. Her saucy between-song patter, superb voice and showmanship belies her years and brings with her a sexy slice of the Caribbean to the UK." - The Independant
