These events will be of interest and relevance to a range of people including: • Teachers from Early Years, Schools and Colleges and Staff working in Offender Services • Lecturers from Adult Education, Academics and Researchers from Higher Education • Staff working in Health Services, Mental Health Services and other public services • Black History Month Co-ordinator and Community Activists who are preparing for the 2009 Autumn Black History Season.

Black History - Our Shared History for 365 days every year

Dates: Monday 1st June 2009 at Westminster Council House, London Friday 5th June at the University of Birmingham
Time: 10.00 - 4.00

Mia Morris, founder of www.black-history-month.co.uk, and Yasus Afari, who is known as an 'Ambassador for Rastafari' and is the author of 'Overstanding Rastafari' will lead a team of 'edutainers' and activists who have a range of perspectives to share to explore new ways to recognise and respect Black History, making use of opportunities today and to share good practice. Workshops will include:

RASTAFARI: Roots and Development to bring Teachers and Advisors together with members of The Rastafari Community to explore the current position of Rastafari today, its development and its global impact, plus the important Rastafari focus on African History

"Rispek juu": 50 years of focus on Languages of the Caribbean part of the "Year of Respect and Recognition for Caribbean Languages" providing up to date information about the development, use and spread of Caribbean languages today (NB see below for the event on 3 06 09 which specifically focuses on this)

Involving Caribbean Creative Artistes in the Classroom: Dub Poets, Drummers, Story Tellers Musicians and others who bring insights in to Black History and culture through their work and supporting the Department of Children, Schools and Families National Strategies for 'Excellence and Enjoyment: Supporting Black Children in Schools'

'Rispek juu!' - 'Respect is due!'

Launch event for '50 years of focus on Languages of the Caribbean'
Date: Wed 3rd June Time: 10.00 - 4.00
Venue: CENTERPRISE BOOKS 136 -138 Kingsland High Street, Dalston, London E8 2NS

The focus of this event is to explore the position today relating to the languages of the Caribbean and their use in the UK, the continuum between English based Caribbean languages eg Jamaican and Standard English and the need for English language support, as well as interpreting and translation, or language advocacy. The 2009/10 Caribbean Languages Conference Series will bring professionals from the Caribbean and UK together to provide up to date information about the issues, development, use and spread of Caribbean languages today.
