Backpack Training Course
Monday 12th - Friday 16th July 2010
Cardiff MAS Camp; Channel View Leisure Centre, Jim Driscoll Way, Grangetown, Cardiff CF11 7HB
10.00am - 5.00pm (evenings optional, depending on participant's availability) What does the training involve ?
All participants will over one week receive training in the following:
• costume research and design
• backpack construction
• head piece and mask making
• carnival drumming (optional)
• carnival dance (optional)
All participants will have the opportunity to design and create one large-scale backpack King costume.
All King costumes will be paraded in the 21st anniversary Cardiff MAS Carnival on Saturday 31st July 2010.
During the optional evening sessions (5.00 - 9.00pm), participants will have the option of return to:
• continue working on their individual backpacks
• explore carnival dance and drum techniques
• explore SWICA's extensive world-wide carnival documentation
• meet with Steve Fletcher, Founder and Artistic Director of SWICA for a one on one advice session
Potential participants will need to complete an application form.
Those successfully selected will need to send a non-returnable £100 booking confirmation to secure their
place (this will be the only cost - all materials and tutors are provided).
