CARIBBEAN CARNIVALS
St Kitts Carnival
Next Carnival: January 2012
Carnival on the island of St Kitts is held every year in December. The event combines Christmas celebrations with the culture and spirit of Carnival. The capital, Basseterre is the centre of activity with the purpose built Carnival village hosting the events.
The island comes alive, the opening gala kicks off the party followed by Calypso shows, Masquerade, King and Queen pageants and street parties. Clowns, Moko-Jumbies, (stilt walkers, originating in West Africa) and masquerades, are a major part of the celebration of folk culture on St. Kitts. To bring in the New year, enjoy the National Carnival New Year's Day Parade on the 1st January and the final 'Las Lap' the following day.
