Tell us about Dee's Deli...
Dee's Deli is a little bit of everything. As well as traditional Caribbean food, we serve Welsh dishes. We also provide outside catering and have carried out several Caribbean evenings including tradtional music, steel drums played by me and entertainment.
When did you open, and how has your shop been received so far?
We opened in December 2010, after designing the premises entirely ourselves. The shop has been very well received, and customers like the fact that we sell traditional Caribbean spices, so they can recreate the dishes they have eaten in our cafe themselves in their own home.
What prompted you to set up your own business?
When I went on holiday with my husband to East Sussex we noticed the wide variety of shops selling local and international produce including several Delicatessens. We thought that we would try to recreate that ambience in Holyhead.
What does a typical work week look like for you? Do you get time off?
To be honest it's non stop work and no play, but I love cooking and interacting with the customers, so that's okay with me. When the Deli is closed we are constantly planning new menus, tinkering with existing ones and planning exciting events.
Are there many other Caribbean food outlets and shops in the area?
I am the only, and first ever Caribbean establishment on Anglesey.
You were originally from London what made you decide to move to Wales, and would you ever move back?
I moved from London for a quieter life. I don't think I would ever go back as I met my husband here and have a young family
Have you always had a passion for food and cooking, when did the cooking love affair start?
Yes I have always had a passion for food. I was brought up in an environment where cooking was a joyful affair not a chore, and this instilled a love of food in me.
How important is it to you to use local produce?
Very important. All of the local shops like to support eachother and the customers appreciate the fact that we source our ingredients locally whenever possible.
What is the most popular dish that you serve?
Our home made Jamaican patties are very popular. As well as selling these at a local produce fair to great acclaim, I have been to the local Comprehensive school to take part in a cookery demonstration, showing the pupils how to make a tradtional pattie from scratch.
What can customers expect when they come to Dee's Deli and what lasting memory would you like them to leave with?
Good home cooking, food full of flavour, a warm welcome and food cooked with love.
