Haiti: Year Zero

Haiti: Year Zero

Mario Joseph, named as Haiti's Most Respected Human Rights Lawyer by the New York Times, will deliver a key note address at the Haiti: Year Zero + 2 Fundraiser on 12 January 2012 at Trade Unions Congress House, London WC1.

Haiti: Year Zero + 2 is a fundraising event that will commemorate the devastation that occurred on the afternoon of 12th January 2010 when the island of was hit by the worst earthquake for 200 hundred years. In a matter of 35 seconds the island’s delicate infrastructure was destroyed. As many as 315,000 people lost their lives in what is the world’s worst humanitarian disaster for 65 years.

Haiti's desolation has been compounded by international failure to protect the interests of some of the most vulnerable people, in the western hemisphere's poorest country. Despite charities having collected billions globally, an estimated 600,000 Haitians continue to live in squalid conditions and hundreds of thousands face illegal eviction from homeless encampments. 6,300 Haitians have died of the cholera introduced by UN troops and for women and children there is the constant threat of a rape.

This event is seeking to raise funds that will be taken directly to Haiti by Mario Joseph to be used by Haitian people to assist in their recovery from the severe devastation to their country and their lives, and to build a better, self-reliant future. Mr Joseph currently represents thousands facing eviction and will be addressing the reality of life on the ground for displaced Haitians and advocating the just case for reparations.

Haiti: Year Zero + 2 will include Film - featuring the London premiere of Kenbe La Ayiti: Haitian’s on Haiti & Poto Mtan: Haitian Women, Pillars of the Global Economy Photographic Exhibition: featuring the work of Rodney Rascona and Leah Gordon followed by a spectacular night of entertainment featuring: Dennis Bovell, Carmen Rodney, Alexander D Great (UK Calypso Monarch 2011) and Debra Romain, Akala with Asheber and the Afrikan Revolution, Eri Okan, Marv-Ill and Varnia Lovinsky
