Imperial College presents...

First Year Project Open Day

Want to find out more about studying Physics at University? The First Year Project Open Day will take place on Friday 24 June 2011.

This is a perfect opportunity to find out more about studying Physics at one of the UK's leading Universities, Imperial College London. Discover why physics is 'cool' and how a Physics degree can reap huge financial benefits in the long run.

Hosted by Dr Mark Richards (aka Kemist) - a scientist and DJ - who has always maintained a strong desire to encourage more students of Caribbean origin to apply to Imperial and pursue further study and eventual careers in science subjects. This promises to be a truly enlightening Open Day so aim high and register now, as time is short and limited places remain.

To book a place for the Project Open Day on Friday 24 June 2011 please register using the online form which will be available on this page from January 2011, choosing which session you would like to attend; morning or afternoon. The morning session from 10.30am contains a lecture programme and tours of the department and campus, following which visitors are free to explore the project displays for the full afternoon. The tours (at 1.00pm) and lecture programme (at 2.00pm) are repeated at the start of the afternoon session, with shorter time available to explore the projects afterwards.

Visitors with disabilities or special needs who require assistance, please send an email to m.fajardo@imperial.ac.uk

Dr Mark Richards has a BSc in Chemistry and a PhD in Atmospheric Physics from Imperial College London. After working in finance for a while within the IT industry, Mark returned to Imperial in 2002 as a Post Doctoral Researcher in the High Energy Physics to manage a Technology Transfer program. He has since co-founded Duvas Technologies, an Imperial College spin-out company specialising in wireless air sensing networks for real-time pollution mapping. Mark is currently a member of the Physics Teaching Staff and also the Schools Liaison Officer for the Physics Department.

Mark is an active member of Imperial As One - the Universities' Race Equality Advisory Group, and has been involved in numerous widening participation and outreach programs that aim to encourage more students from diverse backgrounds to pursue science and engineering as career choices. As a student, Mark spent most of his spare time Djing as DJ Kemist and more recently founded Xtremix Records, an independent label that provides a remixing service to the music industry.

'I love to experiment with sound waves (Dj & remixing) in much the same way as I enjoy research into the behaviour of light waves (spectroscopy), both can stimulate the mind and provide a deeper insight into our physical world but from very different perspectives.'
Dr Mark Richards
