Hair FAQ's
I find I have to wash my hair more often than I would like, and it is getting really dry, what can I do?
Afro hair, unlike European or Asian hair, lacks moisture, so it is best to wash your hair once or twice a week, anymore is likely to have a damaging effect. Look out for shampoos that don't strip your hair, followed by a full moisturising conditioner. Treat your hair to oils and moisturising treatments regularly. Try to avoid excess alcohol, and keep to a healthy diet for that extra boost.
Is it safe to relax my children's hair?
Children do have more sensitive scalps, and safety can be an issue! Most relaxer products contain harsh chemicals, which, if left on the hair for too long, or not applied correctly, can cause damage to the hair and scalp. Make sure children are aware of the process so they can alert the hairdresser if they experience uncomfortable heat or burning.
My hair is not growing, what do I do?
There can be alot of reasons why your hair doesn't grow, diet, pollution, and lifestyle all play a big part. Take a look at what's happening in your life to see if there is change/stress, or maybe your diet is lacking essential vitamins and minerals. Regular shampooing with scalp stimulating products, regular conditioning and massaging your scalp can help to stimulate hair growth.
Will bonding break my hair and make it weaker?
No, but do have your hair done by a professional, as there are many horror stories. After keeping your hair extensions for a while, give your hair a break and treatment. Always use bond remover to take out your extensions.
How can I stop getting split ends?
One of the easiest ways to damage Afro-Caribbean hair is to comb or pull it whilst wet. This is when it is in its most fragile state. After washing and fully conditioning your hair, gently comb out tangles with a wide tooth comb. If your hair is difficult to comb through, use a leave in conditioner, and comb again.
I have had my hair in braids for over a year, and want to change the style, how long should I wait until I relax my hair?
Once you have taken the braids out, wash and treat you hair using an intense treatment conditioner. It is advisable to leave your hair at least 2-3 weeks before relaxing it again. Obviously the longer you can leave it the better.
