COMMUNITY

She calls herself 'a mum on a mission', and when you consider the breathtaking number of projects Jenni Steele is involved with, we're sure you'll agree.

Mission possible for Supermum

Now it's not unknown for people to list a whole range of professions on their business card, but when it comes to Jenni Steele the 36-year-old from Bellingham in south London, she's really doing it. Oh, and she's also aiming to become a councillor at next year's local elections.

Having spent time researching political parties, she picked the Liberal Democrats. "I looked at the diverse side of the party as well as the activities they put on for youth"

Jenni Steele is now a Prospective Councillor Candidate for Liberal Democrats, she hopes to represent for her community in Bellingham South London Lewisham Borough where she has lived and grown her family for the last 10 years in the May elections 2010.

"Following my shadow opportunity with OBV I have been to a few meetings and realised that the much needed input in our community is missing which is the active parental voice and the voice of the youth of today...And that we can all make a difference if we get involved..."

Her first priority is her three teenagers, including two football-mad sons, but in between her office manager job and caring for her kids she is a social entrepreneur, fashion designer, radio presenter, DJ, actress, dancer, singer and model. As well as running Lioness Ladies, a group that helps local mothers, she also has her own fashion label - Lion and Lioness Clothing - which has been endorsed by a host of music stars including Ms Dynamite and Omar. Money raised through this social enterprise is ploughed back into community projects such as football kits for young boys.

Jenni calls herself a 'football mum' and has two soccer-mad sons; a 13-year-old who trains with the Charlton Athletic academy, and a 17-year-old on Cambridge United's books. Her 14year old daughter possibly following in Mum's footsteps and studying sociology.

"If I am not represented as a parent raising teenagers, then my children are not represented because we represent each other... this means that the voice of the next generation of leaders will not be heard or represented this is an important factor for the future .It's important that we are all represented and that our voices are heard what effects me in my community will also affect you in your community and this will affect our children on a larger and varied scale."

But if she does get elected, it won't stop Jenni being involved in community projects. She is already lining up a gig as a presenter on Generation Radio, a licensed station serving the Clapham Park area.

It should be second nature to her, having already clocked up an impressive record as a presenter on a number of community stations. As if that wasn't enough, Jenni is also an actress, with small parts in Channel 4's adaptation of Zadie Smith's White Teeth, playing a prison warden in BBC1's series In Deep, and in Life and Lyrics, the general-release movie featuring Ashley Walters.

She says acting is a 'gift' given to her, but she's also a talented dancer appearing in the music videos of the Blazing Squad, Freddi Kruga and Fatboy Slim. Last year she also designed the clothes for Bashy's Black Boys video shoot. On top of that, Jenni is a professional model who has featured on Nike adverts, and in 2007 she won the Miss Beautiful pageant. Asked how she fits all this in, as well as being a working mother, Jenni modestly says that she's "not doing everything at once", but what is clear is that she is an exceptional, driven and talented women of the kind that politics - and public life in general - is crying out for.

"I feel I represent the voice for many others and understand what's going on as I am an active member in the community and make it my duty to find out what is/not happening.

A project I am hoping to put together this year involves the older generation who are retired by encouraging ,assisting and supporting them into become mentors for the youth. I feel there is a misunderstood gap between them both and it would be good for the community and very rewarding for retired and still very active elders in our community to get involved. This project will give the older generation a chance to share their valued life and work experiences and also allow the youth to open up and understand life from a different prospective young people will also gain the support ,advice and life experience knowledge that they desire..."

"I am because we are!" It's not just about me we can all make a difference...
