Review 2009

Mahogany: a tropical tree, valued for its quality wood. Weddings: a festive celebration of a union between two families. Both of the aforementioned, combined to produce an effortlessly stylish exhibition. Mahogany Weddings joined quality and brand to distinguish itself from other bridal fashion shows in London. Romance, elegance, sophistication and an epicurean’s palate defined the event held at the Holiday Inn in Bloomsbury.

The chic collections were lavishly African inspired through and through. Exhibitors lined the natural-toned room with their showcases for the majority attended brides-to-be. Amid the photographers, make-up artists and caterers were designers and jewellers. Tumaini Lawrence of Kai Personal Designs profiled her bespoke lovable embroidered gifts. Suitable as gifts for bridemaid's and baby showers, the set of bags displayed three exceptionally attention-grabbing figures, a very unique brand.

Sharmain Forde of Black Room Interiors profiled a few of her contemporary life-style designs she described as, "Edgy and sassy but very contemporary." Omujwok Okwa of Meroe Jewellery based in Birmingham profiled his jewellery influenced heavily by his sojourns throughout various West and East African countries. He has been academically trained and travelled throughout Africa where he has shared his work as well as gained insight from jewellers in these countries. Toks Faturoti of A Timeless Culture presented her handmade bags, accessories and soft furnishings that were a glamorous mixture of Asian and African embroidery, like Okwa, her work was also based on inspirations from her global jaunts.

The fashion show's catwalk was draped in white and sheathed in gold ribbons. Accompanied by music and live saxophonist Justin, the bedazzling beauty of the multi-hued mahogany models overwhelmed the audience. The models, ladies and gentlemen alike, swaggered in their cultural bridal wear. Sheeba Bell Design's vibrant pieces, Toffee and Lace's eclectic selection, Anthony Formal Wear's white suits and Link Boutique's green and red dresses were all enchanting.

Weddings are a profoundly personal occurrence for the bride, groom and their families. The Mahogany Bridal Fashion show was an enticing and unpredictable occasion capturing the essence of one of our favourite functions-weddings!
