Ras Shorty I, formerly Lord Shorty Born Garfield Blackman, has long be thought of as the king or founding father of soca. He performed as a successful Calypso artist for many years. He was one of the first artists to incorporate Indian style of music into Soca and Calypso tunes.
His music career which started in the mid 1960’s, gave him a number of hits over the years as his pushed the boundaries and experimented with different styles. He was a tall man standing at six foot three, giving unique and memorable performances. In the early Eighties, he changed his name from Lord Shorty to Ras Shorty I delivered a new style of music called Jamoo.
He died in the summer of 2000
