Nordia James
Nordia James was born in Jamaica (St Thomas) and came to live in Wembley, London when she was 11 years. She is a life long sufferer of Sickle Cell disease. Sickle Cell disease is a blood disorder which affects the haemoglobin in the blood, because the blood cells are sickle shape it doesn't carry oxygen effectively to major parts of the body and this in turn can create complications of the major organs. At the age of 17 she also discovered that she had Ulcerative Colitis, a disease that causes inflammation and sores, in the lining of the rectum and large intestine, because of this illness and the complications that it caused she had to have her large intestine removed at the age of 21.
In 2009 Nordia decided to enter into the Miss Black Britain competition which raises awareness of positive black female models within Britain.
"I have made it passed the castings and semi-final and now I am one of the finalists in the competition this year. I believe that I can be a positive inspiration for a lot of young women, not only am I a very determine, strong, dedicated , intelligent and a positive young woman. I also believe that I have been through some challenges in my life which have made me the person I am today and that is the reason why I am so focused on where I am going and what I want out of life. I believe that everything happens for a reason, I am me and unique in my own way, although there has been times when I feel like throwing the towel in I always remember that I am lucky in many different ways and my family and friends keep me going."
