NYAM - Jamaican Food & Culture Seminar

Jamaican Food & Culture Celebration Event Comes to Birmingham

An exclusive screening and celebration of Birmingham's first Jamaican food & culture documentary is taking place at the Birmingham Council House next Saturday the 7th of May.

The NYAM Jamaican Food & Culture finale event will commence at 6pm and will incorporate live cultural performances, authentic Caribbean food and Jamaican cultural stalls. It will also provide an opportunity for guests to view the cities first Jamaican food and culture documentary. The documentary charts the journeys of Jamaican migrants to Birmingham since the 50's whilst exploring the impact of Jamaican culture on the UK's second City.

The documentary has been created as part of the hugely popular Jamaican food & culture project; Nyam. The project, coordinated by community Interest Company Aspire4u CIC, has been instrumental in teaching young people of varying backgrounds the art of cooking traditional Jamaican food. In addition, the project has conducted oral history research within the Jamaican community and held several successful Jamaican cultural events.

Guests at the event will include Tim Campbell (Winner of BBC's 'The Apprentice'). There will also be representatives from BBC Radio 4 who will be recording a feature as part of the Woman's Hour series. Director of Aspire4u CIC Daniella Genas is currently being featured on the series.

Aspire4u CIC Administrator, Saima Tasneem says "The Nyam team members have worked tirelessly to ensure that this event will be entertaining for all regardless of background and we are sure that everyone will have a fantastic time whilst learning about Jamaican culture".

The Nyam project has been funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund with the aim of preserving and promoting Jamaican cultural heritage in the City. The project will also produce a website, booklet and oral history CD which will be available following the event.
