Sickle Cell

What is Sickle Cell

Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is a genetically inherited blood condition affecting the blood haemoglobin. There are different types of the disease, including Sickle Haemoglobin C disease, and Sickle Beta Thalassaemia, and Sickle Cell Anaemia being the most common. It is hereditary and not contagious. It is estimated there are over 10,000 adults and children with sickle cell disease in Britain at present.

There is no basic cure for SCD, and people who suffer from it can only manage the symptoms of the disease. Treatments available include pain relief, fluids, blood transfusions and bone marrow transplants, and enhance their condition and improve their quality of life.
