Smiler
Smiler, born Joseph Bartlett-Vanderpuye on 9th August 1985 is a 23 year old British hip-hop artist from Woolwich, South East London.
Smiler began his career rapping in the streets of london, when asked what inspired him he explains "Besides it being my form of expression, my daily journey its not short of inspirational leaving me in need of a vent, a verbal outlet, and nothing or no one understands me the way an instrumental does."
He decided to embark on a journey into the music business when he started getting requests from people via myspace to produce more material.
Inspired by encouraging accolade from the local community Smiler understands that it would be selfish not to let the rest of the nation get an earful of his talent. Such talent has also triggered off the emergence of the newly established independent label; Elementary Entertainment. Via the label smiler is due to release his mixtape called the 'Musical Omnibus', which, by most (if not all) is eagerly anticipated.
Working with established producers such as 'Tracklacers and Darkstar.........' Smiler has blessed the airwaves with several tracks; namingly Craziest, Desire, Thinking 'bout you, Neighborhood, and Slavery (which was B listed on bbc 1xtra).
Smiler Feat Stylah - Craziest Single Release Date - Janaury 7th (Digital) Label - Elementary Entertainment
23 year old Smiler has already made his mark on the UK underground, with street anthem 'Neighbourhood' getting to #4 in the Channel U charts and receiving specialist support from 1Xtra, Choice, Kiss 100 and the pirate stations across the UK. In 2007 his success continued with 'Break The Chains' propelling him into the spotlight with appearances on BBC London and getting B-listed on the 1Xtra play list. 'Craziest' is taken from Smiler's mixtape 'The Musical Omnibus' and pays homage to the whole of the UK.
The mixtape and track has already had early support from Radio 1 (Huw Stephens, Ras Kwame) 1Xtra (Twin B, Ace & Vis) Kiss FM (Dynamite MC) Choice FM (DJ 279, Jenny Francis, Phoebe One) and the Asian Network (Kayper). The track actually sampled from the original 'Craziest' which was infact produced by Naughty by Nature. Sample clearing policies and procedures (along with an invite from DJ 279 to attend New Yorks Power 107; interviewed by Marly Marl, alongside Styles P, Infamous Mobb Deep, and many others) encouraged Smiler to take a trip to America in November 2007 in an attempt to get the sample cleared.
This was initially agreed by Naughty by Nature in person who thoroughly appreciated Smilers interpretation of the track. After sending them the video along with official plans for release Warner Bros are now causing complications regarding the clearancing, "hmmmmmm, might it have anything to do with Smilers version being better than Naughty by Natures original?".
The song is already appearing on Imeem, Bebo and Myspace, and with an official digital release date on the cards, Craziest will be a track pumping out of mobile phones and stereos throughout the Christmas period and into 2009!
The highly anticipated mixtape 'The Musical Omnibus' soon to follow in 2009.
