U ROY &
JUNIOR ‘Police & Thieves’ MURVIN
(DOUBLE BILL)
Reggae fan Al Hardwicke, has arranged for two of his favourite roots reggae legends to make a rare visit from Jamaica to perform at his local venue, The Albany in Deptford.
In the 1970’s U-Roy developed a distinctive dj style of rapping or ‘toasting’ over a record that single-handedly changed Jamaica's music scene and earned him the nickname, The Originator and made him the godfather of todays Rap and Hip-Hop.
Junior Murvin achieved fame as the falsetto singer of "Police And Thieves" , an international hit for him and innovative reggae producer, Lee "Scratch" Perry. Artists as diverse as The Clash and Boy George have covered the song, and he has maintained his profile over twenty years after it was established.
Both headlines will be supported by a nine-piece band made up of Jamaica’s finest musicians, including such luminaries as Glen Da Costa and David Madden on horns.
The Albany offers an intimate setting, benefiting from the most recent sound technology, and offers a unique opportunity to hear two of Jamaica’s reggae superstars. Really now, don’t miss it.
