SPICY SOCA Vol. 2 is an album that should take Grenada’s input into the Soca industry to a true international level. Until the last 3or 4 years it was very difficult to get the music from the spice isle’s here in the UK, as most of these were geared towards the short carnival season with lyrics and messages geared to the local communities. Only a few artist such as Ajamu, Val Adams & Randy Isaac would for whatever reasons, produce an album with tracks that could be played after the 2nd Monday in August and even then these would be aimed at the market in the US & Canada.
This new series of Spicy Soca volumes is different, for starters Spicy Soca is produced right here in the UK, courtesy of DON ONE RECORDS UK, and this volume (covering the 2006 carnival) brings together some of the well established artist with some new kids on the block and give us a sample of Grenadian Soca that you could not distinguish from either Trinidad or Barbados were all the best Soca has been coming from over the last 20 years.
All that I have said above is established in this 16 track CD, with the 8 tracks that has been included from theTrio called ELO, pronounced as hello without the H.
Sweet well constructed groovy tracks that will have you singing and dancing which is the “New Sounds” of spice music.
The opening track on the album is an attribution to this, “I Wish” is a message of thanks to the Father and I am sure once you have heard it you will be pressing the rewind button. The following track is the bands big track for the year “Take your Time” and at least 3 of the other tracks from the boys fall into this loveable, groovy Soca category. Then there the big tracks for the road “Hold your Dog” & “Carnival” which shows the versatility of these new kids on the block led by Elwin Mark.
Other great groovy/party tracks on the album are “Debbie” from Mr. West and “You are the One” from Young Sounds. There is also 3 pieces of the “Tabanka Riddim” with “Propaganda” from Randy Isaac, “Wine Up” from Kevin Rougier & the road mix of the titled riddim “Tabanka” from Berbice.
Former International King, Zingo is island proud with his track “National Colours” which is a celebration of the islands 32nd year of Independence, then there is a very funny but danceable track from another New Kid, Spice Rock who tell the story of a couple who shares a car, “Car Keys” will have you in stitches. To complete the album 2005 Soca Monarch & Road March king ”Boogie B” give us “Iron Man” on the “Sauters Riddim”.
Spicy Soca Vol. 2 is indeed a great album for both listening & partying and I can’t wait to hear what’s on offer for 2007.
