Reggae and dancehall legend Lincoln 'Sugar' Minott has died (July 11th 2010), at the age of 54, just a days before the scheduled release of his latest album, Raw Sugar.
Born in Kingston Jamaica, Sugar Minott's musical career began in his teens, after working with sound systems, he then joined the 'The African Brothers' in 1969, releasing a number of singles in the early 70's, including
'No Cup No Broke' in 1974. Minott went on to work, at Clement 'Coxsone' Dodds' Studio One, where he continued to develop his talents
'Hang On Natty',
'Mr. DC',
'Vanity', and
'Jah Jah Children', were some of his popular hits that followed.
He continued to make music and a string of albums inclduing, 'Live Loving', 'Bittersweet', and in 1979,
'Ghetto-ology', and in 1978 left Studio One, and started his own label 'Black Roots' and Youth organization.
By the 1980's Sugar Minott returned to his roots style, and his album
'Roots Lovers' (1980) was a massive hit in the UK, followed by
'Hard Time Pressure'. Minott became a leading figure on the UK reggae scene, and is often regarded as a dancehall music pioneer. His hit song
'Good Thing Going' reached Number 4 in the UK Singles Chart in 1981, and he has continued to perform and tour the world since.
Over the years he has worked with many of the reggae greats, and in 2010, Sugar was busy as ever, with his children following in his musical footsteps,
Fire Pashon his daughter, and his sons band 3B2.
After decades of hits songs, and many will morn the passing of this great reggae superstar.
