ARTS
TALAWA THEATRE
The recent Arts Council announcement about their withdrawal of funds from Talawa Theatre, is something that should concern anyone interested in the black performing arts. Those of us who try to make a living as actors, dancers, directors, writers, etc. know only too well the disastrous effects of cuts to black run companies.
Public Meeting
The Arts Council claims that their research proves we do not want a theatre of our own.
It is argued that we Caribbean people (not Asians or anyone else) are now part of the “mainstream” and we should not be seeking to promote our culture, but join the mainstream culture.
* If you feel any of these claims concern you,
* if you have an interest in black performing arts,
* if you feel that Caribbean culture is relevant/irrelevant,
* if you want to express an opinion,
then the fate of Talawa Theatre is central to any discussion.
A public meeting has been arranged for 2.30pm, Sunday September 11th 2005,
at the Africa Centre.
This important meeting may be the only chance you get to have a say in what
happens to our rights to cultural expression in this country. Remember, the
Arts Council claim their policy is influenced by information we give them.
They will be attending the meeting, so take this opportunity to speak to
them direct. Come to:
