Terrortone Soundsystem
The original Paddington Terror Sound System was born in 1969 to the great Miss Olive Douglas who dreamt of being the first woman sound system owner in Britain. The sound system dominated the whole of West and North West London throughout the mid 70's and 80's coming right through to now, battling sounds every week such as Java, Duke Vin, Lord Koo's, Success, King Tropical, Warrior, Revolution, Coxsone, Frontline, Jah Shaka – just to name a few.
Places to play in were abundant such as Crypt, the legendary Peoples Club, Paddington School on Harrow Rd, Route 18 and the like. In a career spanning three decades, Terrortone Sound has emerged as one of England's most hard working sound systems to date. In 2003 Terrortone Sound start touring Europe and promoting their familiar brand of music and spreading their unique sound and African message.
Terrortone Sound have been playing roots and culture tunes from day one. They neither pretend to be something they are not nor speak of issues beyond their own reality. Based in Paddington, London, where the founder members were all brought up, Wally set up his own family sound system. In 1975 he joined forces with Tony Douglas amalgamating under one umbrella called Paddington Terror.
Tony Modesty came along in 1977 with Daddy Ranx, working his way from the bottom – lifting boxes and running wires that sort of thing. "When you are given the opportunity to a big Sound System in the Dance hall arena, you reach out and take it with both hands. It's a gift and we must always value it."
As well as being brought up within a small black community, music has played a significant role in our upbringing. "Going back to Jamaica was a key factor for the family", says Wally "You get the real reggae feel when you're in Jamaica. There's no comparison".
The first set of artist to emerge from this sound's stable was brothers Tony and Keith Douglas, followed by Sweetie Irie and Joe Ninety and Daddy Ranks – these artists are well known in the reggae fraternity.
The Terrortone Sound message to the youth of today is "stay away from drugs, guns and crime. Secondly to all DJ's, sounds and selectors, remember seh when you are spreading your message to the masses via your sound ensure you send out the right message as music is a very powerful tool always deal with positivity, remember seh peace, love, harmony and unity we ah deal wid."
