A Play by Malique Toussaint
The Story of David Walker's 'Appeal to the Coloured Citizens of the World'
With Charles Angiama as David Walker
Produced & Directed by Malique Toussaint
@ Theatro Technis, Crowndale Rd, Camden, NW1 1TT
27th August-6th September, 2009:
The Abolitionist is a play about 19th century anti slavery campaigner David
Walker, a free black man who dedicated his life to the abolition of slavery.
He was responsible for writing and publishing the most inflammatory document in the history of the United States up to that point, demanding freedom now! For all Africans held in
bondage.
The Abolitionist gives an insight into the views he espoused in that document, known as "The Appeal", where he condemns
the evils of slavery as immoral, unconstitutional and ungodly with an eloquence unsurpassed before or since.
The play is an enlightening, inspirational and educational piece of theatre, guaranteed to keep you enthralled throughout.
Witness this heart rending appeal by David Walker to 'the coloured citizens of the world. Hear the eloquence of this self educated descendent of slaves as he demands the immediate abolition of slavery and condemns the death like apathy of his people. His condemnation of the hypocrisy of America 'land of the free'. David Walker a man almost forgotten by history yet the inspiration to future freedom fighters like Marcus Garvey, W.E.B Dubois, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King.
