Z Star

Born in London to Trinidadian parents, Z* (say zee-star) is a singer and song-writer blowing a much needed breath of fresh air into my jaded view of the London music mix. She is a regular fixture on the European summer festival scene and someone you simply must see live.

Z-Star's live shows are quite simply, unforgettable. From the first strum of her acoustic guitar to the last note she sings, you get the feeling that you've just experienced something very special. Her deep raspy blue tones flow effortlessly with the power of a diva who has mastered silence. Z* is a gifted individual, the self-penned lyrical stories of life and love she offers are evergreens, vivid and beautifully expressed within a dynamic emotive sound. Musically, she conjures up a psychedelic melting pot of blues jazz bossa funk reggae and rock, her presence onstage igniting the audience with an energy as still as a slow burning candle or as wild as a Molotov. Her visceral blend of dirty, New Orleans Cajun blues by way of afro-bossa nova rhythms delivers a charged and sassy show. Musically she has been compared to Meshell Ndegeocello, Joan Armatrading, Sade and Sly & the Family Stone.

Guardian writer John L Walters wrote "Range, power and style a soul jazz diva to watch out for. "

Z* has recorded, supported and performed with Youssoo Ndour, Angelique Kidjo, Gary Brooker, Nigel Kennedy, Omar, Keziah Jones and Natacha Atlas. In April 2002, Z* was amongst the cast of The Vagina Monologues, which included Isabella Rossellini, Myeera Syal, Beverley Knight. Her debut album Who Loves Lives was released in June 2004 on Virgin Emi Italy to a wave of critical acclaim

Z* is currently producing her third solo album, whilst playing select dates throughout Europe and Russia.
