Jamaica Rum Tings 2014 Carnival

Date: August 23 2014 Venue name: The Prince of WalesVenue address: The Prince Of Wales Brixton, Brixton Road, London, United Kingdom

It’s that time of the year again where we turn our attention to Europe’s biggest street party, The Notting Hill Carnival. Soundsystems dotted all over the back streets; it was first set up as the annual celebration embracing all of the Caribbean islands. To close this summer’s ‘Jamaica Rum Tings’ series, Wray & Nephew will be teaming up with the legendary Fabio to bring the spirit of Carnival to South London for a unique day and night event at The Prince of Wales on Saturday 23rd August for a house party style takeover.

On this Saturday of the carnival weekend, Wray and Nephew Overproof Rum will warming up South London with an epic line-up headlined by Fabio, who will play a specially mixed set inspired by Jamaican music which has shaped his incredible career to date. This will be supported by a soundclash hosted by Normski featuring Skitz & Rodney P, Rompa’s Reggae Shack and more. DJ sets will come from Dub Vendor, Digital Niyabinghi and other very special guests. Rootikal will host the terrace area throughout the day bringing their unique blend of contemporary and revival roots reggae.

This event closes the ‘Jamaica Rum Tings’ series; a celebration of Jamaica, inspired by Wray & Nephew’s rich Jamaican heritage, roots and its influence on UK culture. The series has been brought to life this year in Wray’s House; bringing the house party vibe back!

Guests will enjoy the sounds of Jamaican music from all eras; skank to the latest tracks and salute the original riddims that inspired them. Playing the best in old and new school reggae, Wray & Nephew Overproof Rum promises the best soundclash London has seen for years.

From the front room to the kitchen, to the yard, there’s a thread that runs throughout the heart of any Jamaican household where a truly memorable house party comes to life.

In every Jamaican household, the front room is a special place, reserved for special guests and occasions, symbolising a culture of hospitality and pride. Step inside Wray’s Front Room a recreation of the traditional Jamaican front room, patterned furnishings assembled in the unique and distinctive Jamaican style. Check out the People’s Gallery; a visual story of Jamaican imagery and influence and watch an exclusive Director’s Cut of two Dazed and Confused Music Nation documentaries on UK bass music containing previously unseen footage of the artists behind it, and how they were influenced to develop new music genres that have become part of the UK‘s musical DNA.

A special guest chef from a local Jamaican restaurant blesses Wray’s Kitchen with a one-off BBQ menu featuring unique twists on Jamaican classics that will sizzle taste buds on the roof terrace until 7pm. London’s original reggae music shop Dub Vendor will bring a selection of vinyl for guests to browse, listen to and buy. Guests will be invited to take the Wray & Nephew free pour challenge to win prizes and will also have the chance to learn how to make the perfect Reggae Rum Punch.

Throughout the day Wray’s Yard plays host to a soundclash to end all clashes hosted by Normski with a stream of surprise special guests. Expect the unexpected; this is definitely not to be missed! As midnight strikes, Fabio enters the Yard bringing his own special reggae selection, the tracks that served as his musical inspiration up front, live and direct.

Until the early hours, guests will enjoy the sights, sounds and tastes of Jamaican culture. This Jamaican Independence Day celebration will be sure to kick off the Jamaica Rum Tings series in true Jamaican style.
